Quick answer
A Wi-Fi QR code stores the network name (SSID), password and security type. iPhone and Android cameras recognise it and offer to join the network automatically.
The network name and password are usually printed on the router label or shown in its settings. Most networks use WPA/WPA2/WPA3 security.
The password is stored inside the code, so anyone who scans it can join. Use a separate guest network for customers and change the code if you change the password. The code is generated on your device: we never see your password.
Table cards and the counter in cafés, the room information folder in hotels and holiday rentals, the meeting room wall in offices and the fridge door at home.
Print the network name and password next to the code as well, for laptops and older phones that can’t scan.
The network name and password are case sensitive, so copy them exactly. Make sure the security type matches your router (most use WPA/WPA2/WPA3).
Networks that ask for a username as well as a password (WPA2-Enterprise) and networks with a login page are not supported by standard Wi-Fi codes. Use a guest network with a simple password instead.
